The Technological Presence of My Professors

Professor Elizabeth Anne Teaff

Through investigating Professor Teaff on social media and the internet I was able to uncover many things. I began my search by simply searching her name and discovering any images or links that could possibly provide me with more information. Professor Teaff is currently a professor and head of Access Services at Washington & Lee University. I then proceeded to check social media accounts, starting with Facebook. Facebook can provide a lot of information about people and it can also allow others to have quick and easy access to photos. Through Facebook, I was able to figured out many things. First, she went to Gloversville High School. She studied at State University of New York at Potsdam, studied Art History at VCU, studied Studio Art at Fulton-Montgomery Community College, and studied Library and Information Science at University of South Carolina. Her birthday is June 16th, 1974 and she owns a grey cat. It also appears as if she is a supporter of Ohio State University Football.

Professor Mary Abdoney

When trying to uncover information about Professor Abdoney I followed a similar method. I began searching her name and exploring the top images and websites that came up. I was quickly able to discover her Facebook and Twitter accounts along with some other sites. Professor Abdoney is also a professor at Washington and Lee University and her titles are Associate Professor and Research and Instruction Coordinator. On Facebook, I was able to learn that she went to H.B. Plant High School and later attended the University of Florida. After Florida, she studied Library and Information Science at the University of South Florida. She is originally from Tampa, Florida but currently resides in Lexington, Virginia with her son Emmett Norland and her husband Ned Norland. Her birthday is also June 16th, She married Ned in October of 2012, and purchased a home in Lexington later that year. Judging from her profile picture and other posts such as “my favorite season is the fall or patriarchy” leads me to believe that Professor Abdoney is a strong supporter of the feminist movement.

Overall, I found it very interesting to be assigned the task to explore the web for personal information regarding my professors. Doing this assignment proved just how easy it is to uncover information on anyone in the world. This assignment taught me many things but it mainly re enforced the idea of how important it is to be careful about what you put on the internet. It made me think about the readings from Have Nice Things: Mapping the Relationship Between Online Trolling and Mainstream Culture and how it takes little effort for internet trolls to access someones information. This assignment also proved to me just easy it is for internet providers to filter what you see because they have so much information about you, and this relates back to the reading “The You Loop.” The Filter Bubble: How the New Personalized Web Is Changing What We Read and How We Think. I enjoyed this assignment and thought it did a nice job of showing how important it is to minimize one’s digital footprint along with making sure whatever you put on the web you are okay with everyone seeing.
